Pair of Female Sleeve Dancers
China: Han Dynasty (206 B.C.–220 A.D.)
Painted Buff Pottery
25" H. - 49.8987

The graceful females are wearing robes with elongated sleeves. Their faces are carefully modeled, and their hair is pulled back into a knotted plait. An interesting dance rhythm is suggested by the opposition of the sleeves.

During the Han dynasty, court entertainment—such as sleeve dancing—was a popular subject for burial pottery.
